Netflix is Giving Profile Icons a Makeover with Characters from its Shows

Netflix is updating its profiles feature with modernized characters you already know, plus choosing characters from hot Netflix original programs.

Netflix this week announced that its profile icons are getting a big makeover. The ability to create profiles was introduced five years ago and the profile icons are long overdue for a modern look. Not only are the classic icons being updated, you’ll now be able to choose a character from a popular Netflix original series.

When first introduced, the profile icons you could choose from weren’t anything spectacular. In fact, they were quite bland as you can see in the image below.

In the announcement, Netflix writes: “Today we are announcing an evolution of profiles. The profile icons you’ve used for the last five years are getting a fun makeover. We’re also introducing a bunch of new icons — including some of the most beloved characters from Netflix shows and movies.” Here is a look at what you can expect when the feature reaches you.

Classic profile icons are being updated and you can choose from over 100 different characters from popular Netflix shows.

Profiles allow each member of your household to have their own list of favorite shows. You can also set up profiles for your kids that only show appropriate content related to your child’s age. If you haven’t set one up before, read our beginners guide on how to manage user profiles on Netflix. The process is still the same, but now with tons of new icons to choose from.

It’s nice to see that the old cartoon icons are getting a new modern design. But what’s even better is you can now choose a character from popular original Netflix shows like Stranger Things, Luke Cage, Orange is the New Black, Fuller House, and many others. There will be over 100 new icons rolling out soon. Check out the video below to see how profiles are evolving.

Netflix continues to bring new features and options to its streaming service over the past few weeks. Last week, we learned that the company is rolling out a new TV experience with a sidebar for easier navigation. Netflix also updated its web-based speed test tool, Fast.com, to include more detailed data. And before that, the company introduced automatic downloads of new episodes of your favorite shows on Android. This latest change to profile icons is just another welcome improvement for the video streaming giant. The new profile icons are rolling out to the website, TV devices, and mobile apps over the coming weeks.
