Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 Consumer Preview enables IT administrators to manage roles and features that are installed on computers that are running Windows Server “8” Beta from a remote computer that is running Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

The Remote Tools package is intended for computers that don’t have Visual Studio so that you can debug, test, and profile apps that are executing on them. However, Visual Studio must be installed on the development computer that’s connected to the computers that have the Remote Tools. Connection to the remote debugger and profiler tools is supported in Visual Studio 11 Ultimate Beta, Visual Studio 11 Premium Beta, Visual Studio 11 Professional Beta, and Visual Studio 11 Express Beta for Windows 8.  Connection to the test features requires Visual Studio 11 Ultimate Beta or Visual Studio 11 Test Professional Beta.

The Windows® Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) is a collection of tools that you can use to customize, assess, and deploy Windows operating systems to new computers.
Windows Deployment is for OEMs and IT professionals who customize and automate the large-scale installation of Windows, such as on a factory floor or across an organization. The Windows ADK supports this work with the deployment tools that were previously released as part of the OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) and the Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK).

This document builds on the concepts embodied in the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Cookbook (https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/bb757005.aspx) and the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Application Quality Cookbook (https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/dd371778(v=VS.85).aspx). Like them, this document provides developers with the means to become familiar with how to verify the compatibility of their apps with the new operating system and provides an overview of the few known application incompatibility issues in Windows and Windows Server Developer Preview. The Cookbook contains more than two dozen topics divided into two major sections:

  • General Compatibility
  • New Features and Enhancements

We invite you to check out these topics to learn how to optimize your apps to take advantage of what this newest release of Windows has to offer.
