How to Get Started Using Honey to Save Money Online

We’re always looking for discounts for online purchases. Honey makes it easier to find the best possible price on items across multiple websites.

Saving money on online purchases is always nice, especially when you don’t have to look around for discount codes or coupons. That’s the idea behind Honey, a browser extension you can install on your computer (or use through a mobile app) that applies online coupons on eCommerce websites. Founded in 2012, Honey was purchased by PayPal in January 2020 for a reportedly 4 billion dollars. It’s a favorite tool here at groovyPost as it’s safe to use and works really really well.

Signing Up for Honey

There is no cost to join Honey or to save money. Instead of charging you for its services, Honey earns commissions from stores when you find savings. The easiest way to sign up for Honey is through the official website, although you can also do it through the iOS or Android app.

To sign up:

  1. Click on the link to Join at the top right of the main webpage.
  2. In the signup box, choose Join with Google, Join with Facebook, Join with PayPal, or Join with Email (our recommendation), then follow the directions.

That’s it! You’re now a member of Honey. All that’s left to do is install the Honey extension on your web browser.

Getting the Honey Extension

There are free Honey browser extensions available for Chome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge on both Windows and Mac. It’s also available as a Safari extension on Mac. Normally, just visiting the Honey website will prompt you to install the latest extension for your browser.

Exploring Honey

Once you’ve installed the Honey extension, you’re ready to save money. You can do so through the Savings Finder, Honey Gold, Price History, Droplist, or Amazon Best Price.

Savings Finder

Honey’s first tool is also it’s most popular. The Savings Finder automatically finds and applies coupon codes on over 40,000 e-Commerce sites around the web. One-click is all it takes to save money.

With the Honey extension installed on your favorite browser, shop your favorite website just as you always do. Once you’re finished, and it’s time to checkout, you’ll see a Honey box on the right side of the website. If the box doesn’t launch automatically, click on the Honey button on your browser toolbar. In the Honey box, click Apply Coupons. Once you do, Honey will go behind the scenes and automatically find and activate the best coupon code for the items in your cart. Otherwise, you’ll see a message indicating that you already have the best possible price.

Honey Gold

Some online retailers don’t offer discount codes on purchases. In those instances, you might earn Honey Gold coins instead. Built right into the Savings Finder box, you’ll know how much Honey Gold you’ll receive after you click Apply Coupons. Once you accumulate enough coins, you’ll qualify for discount coupons, which you can use at your favorite websites.

Price History

To find deals even before you shop, visit the Honey website and explore. From here, you can find the coupons, promo codes, and other deals that are currently being promoted by the company. On this page, you can also do product searches and find pricing history. The charts show the history of the product according to the eCommerce site.

In the following example, Kohl’s offering the Beats Studio3 Wireless Headphones in Forest Green for $349.99. To the right of the current price, you’ll notice a link that says “3 Price Changes.” When clicked, you’ll see pricing history for the headphones over the past 30 days. You can also toggle on the chart to show price changes during the past 60 days and 90 days too.

On the Product Info page on the Honey website, you’ll also notice a Shop On button and one saying Add to Droplist. The former, not surprisingly, takes you to the website page where you can order the item you selected.

Add to Droplist

With thousands of products being tracked on the Honey website, you need to have a way to keep track of offers. For this, Honey offers Droplist. With Droplist, Honey keeps track of price changes on items you’re interested in buying. For flexibility, you can assign how long you want Honey to track the information and what percentage off you hope to find on the product.

  1. Move your mouse to the Add to Droplist button; don’t click on the button.
  2. Tap the pencil icon next to Watch for to change how long you want Honey to look for a price drop on the item.
  3. In the same box, tap the pencil icon next to Notify Me to change what percentage change you would like on the item.
  4. Choose to Add to Droplist to confirm your selection.

In the following example, you’d receive an email anytime in the next 90 days when the Beats headphones drop in price by at least 10 percent:

You can review the items on your Droplist at any time by clicking on Droplist at the top right of the Honey website.

Amazon Best Price

With the Honey extension installed, you notice new integration with Amazon.com, the largest online retailer in the world. On every product page, you’ll see buttons to Save to Droplist and one noting the number of price changes for the item, if applicable. Otherwise, the latter button will say Best Price. Clicking on the former will add the item to your Honey Droplist. A click on the latter will take you to the pricing graph mentioned above.
