Taking a note is a good way to remember something. If you’re constantly on a PC all day they come in as handy reminders. In comes Notes X – a gadget you’re going to love if you constantly find yourself covered in sticky notes and wrinkled papers with telephone numbers on them. Ditch the traditional yellow sticky notes and dive into this awesome free gadget for Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Download Notes X
NotesX is a gadget by Fran Rodriguez and you can download it completely free of charge.
Colors
The gadget looks nice and clean and offers a header and a title that stand out from the regular input text.
The gadget features 11 colors. Personally, my favourites are Black and Blue, since those make the text the most readable.
To change the color of your note, click the gadget options and then select a color from the drop down menu.
Add Images to Notes X
You can also optionally add an image to your note. The extra visuals definitely make the note stand apart and give it a Windows 8 metro tile look. This is a feature that the regular sticky notes gadget can’t do.
To add an image, click the gadget options, tick the checkbox and then click on the Select image link to browse to your image. Selecting an image will also change the alignment of the text from centered to left.
It allows you make a slightly longer note than usual too, with an elegant scroll bar that appears on the right. Again, it’s in a typical Windows 8 fashion and it looks nice and clean.
Scrolling down moves the entire note along with the header and title. It would have been nice to be able to choose whether you want the title static or not, but hey – nothing is perfect.
Notes X is a must have-app for anyone who spends a lot of time in front of the computer screen. For anyone who dislikes Windows 8, the gadget looks great on Vista and Windows 7 too. And with a size of just 53.7 KB, it’s a great addition to anybody’s collection of useful apps.

This sounds great, but it’s not available in the Windows app store, so how would you get it for Windows 8? When I click on the link at the top of your blog it brings me to DeviantArt where I can download something my Windows 8 computer doesn’t know how to open.

Hey Merry,
If you’re using Chrome, there’s a known issue about downloading and opening . gadget files through it. Try IE or Mozilla for the download.
Additionally, try saving the file to the desktop and opening it directly from there.
If all else fails, I’ll make a tutorial on how to manually unpack and install windows gadgets.

I am downloading it through Mozilla Firefox, but when I double click on it Windows 8 doesn’t know how to open it. It asks if I want to look for an app in the app store that will open a .gadget. That’s why I’m thinking it’s just a Windows 8 problem. I guess it doesn’t “do” gadgets like 7 did.

Wow! I remember the Windows 8 Consumer Preview supported gadgets fully, but I guess the current version doesn’t.
There are, however, some alternative methods you can use to install the gadget. I’ll write an article about it. :)

Thank so much! I appreciate it — and hopefully many others will as well.
