When Microsoft first released Windows 8, it’s been at a discounted price of $39.99 for the upgrade or $14.99 if you purchased a qualifying PC this year. Starting February 1st, the price of the OS is going up – a lot.
The price increase will apply to Windows 8 software upgrade. Of course if you purchase a new computer, the price will be included in with the device.
Here’s a look at how much each version will cost after January 31st:
- Windows 8 Pro Download: $199.99
- Windows 8 “Core Version”: $129.99
- Windows 8 Pro Pack*: $99.99
*The Pro Pack allows you to upgrade Windows 8 “core version” to the Pro version, which also allows you to install Windows Media Center. Currently Media Center is free, and after the price increases, it will be $9.99.
Remember that computers running XP or higher can be upgraded to Windows 8 (provided the hardware meets minimum requirements). So, if you’re on the fence about whether you’re going to upgrade or not, now’s the time.
