VLC App for Windows Phone Available Now

VLC media player is one of our favorite programs for Windows and a plethora of other platforms, and is now available for Windows Phone 8.1 users.

The VLC media player is one of our favorite programs for Windows and a plethora of other platforms. It’s been our favorite for what seems like forever, as it will play any file type, you throw at it. The VLC app for Windows Phone has been available during its private beta, which we sadly weren’t part of.

But the good news is that VLC is now available for all Windows Phone users in the Windows Phone store. It works with Windows Phone 8.1, which everyone should have by now. If you don’t have it for some odd reason, make sure to read our article on how to get it and other updates early by joining the Preview for Developers program.

Update: According to different sources, this is not the “official” release of VLC for Windows Phone. Apparently, this is still in beta and was made available to everyone via the Windows Phone store. Because of this, remember that you will experience bugs while using it. Whatever the case, if you want to test it out, I would grab it right away as they could remove the app. We’ll have more info on this as it develops

VLC for Windows Phone 8.1 is lightweight and, just like other platforms, will play all video and audio compression formats for files you have stored on the phone or phone’s SD card.

From the app’s description:

VLC media player is a portable, free, and open-source, cross-platform media player and streaming media server written by the VideoLAN project.
VLC media player supports most audio and video compression formats, files, and streaming protocols.
This version is the fist beta of the port of VLC media player to the Windows Phone platform.

I installed it on my Lumia 635, and all seems well. Below is a couple of shots of VLC in action. The interface is fast and responsive and has a few options you can play with. It will display videos in 720×182, 480×800, and 768×1280 display.

This is the first version of the port to Windows Phone, and of course, it’s free. You can get it now from the link below.
