How to View Your LinkedIn Public Profile

You can use your LinkedIn public profile to share your career information with users outside of the platform. Here’s how to set it up.

Social media isn’t a comfortable experience for everyone. I’ve never been a person who has used it effectively, but even a social media cynic like me can see the benefits of having a LinkedIn public profile. If you’re job hunting or looking to build your professional network, LinkedIn is the perfect place to do it.

A public profile on LinkedIn allows other users to find you, but you’ll need to curate the information on it first. You’ll also need to set your permissions so that you can be found. I’ll explain how below.

What Are LinkedIn Public Profiles?

LinkedIn public profiles are a specifically curated version of your standard profile that are accessible to viewers outside of the LinkedIn platform. They’re what people might see when they look you up on search engines like Google. This allows you to be visible to online searchers outside of LinkedIn itself.

Your public profile on LinkedIn showcases a summary of your professional experience. It lets you control which sections of your personal information, such as experience, education, and skills, are available to the public eye. You’re able to hide certain elements, such as your location, from public view.

Although LinkedIn profiles are typically created with privacy settings that allow for some level of public visibility, you can modify these settings to fit your comfort level. If you’re looking for greater exposure, you can optimize your public profile to help with that. Likewise, if you’d prefer to keep hidden, you can limit the information.

Search engines index public profiles, which means that your LinkedIn can appear in Google search results. This increases the chance that potential employers, clients, or collaborators can stumble upon your qualifications and contact you for opportunities when they search for you online.

If you’re on the lookout for new career prospects, this feature can work to your advantage.

How to View Your LinkedIn Public Profile

How to Customize Your Public Profile on LinkedIn

The visibility settings allow you to control which sections of your LinkedIn profile are visible to the public. This is where you’ll need to determine what parts of your profile you want to share publicly and what information you’d prefer to hide.

Before you can do anything, you’ll need to make sure that the information on your standard LinkedIn profile is up-to-date. You can make changes by clicking Me > View Profile on LinkedIn, then pressing the Edit button to the right of your username.

When you’re ready to edit your public profile, you can do so by following these steps.

  1. Open the LinkedIn website and sign in.
  2. Click Me > Settings & Privacy to access your LinkedIn settings.
    Open LinkedIn Settings
  3. Next, click Visibility > Edit your public profile.
    Open LinkedIn public profile settings
  4. In the Edit visibility section on the right, click the Your profile’s public visibility slider in the panel on the right, placing it in the On position.
    Enable LinkedIn Public Profile
  5.  Below it, make changes to your privacy settings, as required. For instance, if you want to make your profile picture only visible to other LinkedIn users in your network, select Only 1st-degree connections under the Profile Photo section.
    Changing LinkedIn public profile settings

Any changes you make to your public profile will activate immediately and should become visible to users straight away. However, if you’ve only just activated your public profile, you may find it takes some time for it to become visible in search engine results.

Creating a Custom LinkedIn URL

Using a custom URL for your LinkedIn public profile reinforces your personal branding and makes your profile more shareable. You’ll want to set it to something that you can easily remember and share. To create a custom URL for your LinkedIn public profile, follow these steps.

  1. On LinkedIn, click Me > Settings & Privacy.
    Open LinkedIn Settings
  2. Next, click Visibility > Edit your public profile.
  3. In the top-right, select the edit button under the Edit your custom URL section.
  4. Type a new URL into the box provided, making sure to follow the rules listed (such as avoiding using special characters and spaces).
  5. Click Save to complete the change.

Your public profile’s URL should be updated immediately. If you’ve shared it with others previously, you may need to share the updated URL to make sure that they can continue to find your profile.

How to Stop Your Public LinkedIn Profile Appearing in Search Engines

Your LinkedIn public profile can be a powerful tool for career opportunities, but that doesn’t mean that you’re looking to have it available to the general public, especially non-LinkedIn users. If that’s the case, you’ll need to stop your profile from appearing in search engines like Google.

However, there’s a catch. Doing this will disable your LinkedIn public profile—only LinkedIn users will be able to view it. To do this, follow these steps.

  1. On LinkedIn, click Me > Settings & Privacy.
    Open LinkedIn Settings
  2. Next, click Visibility > Edit your public profile.
    Open LinkedIn public profile settings
  3. In the Edit Visibility section on the right, click the Your profile’s public visibility slider, placing it in the Off position.
    Disabled public LinkedIn profile

As soon as you switch the slider to Off, your LinkedIn public profile will become hidden again. However, the changes will not be immediate—search engines like Google may take a while to update and hide your page.

However, the page itself should become hidden immediately. Even if Google continues to index the page for a while longer, the information itself should stay hidden.

Managing Your LinkedIn Experience

You don’t need to overthink it. If you get your LinkedIn public profile up and running, you’re getting your name out there. Make sure to keep it updated with any new job news that you have, as out-of-date information might harm your prospects.

Once you’re public, don’t be afraid to interact with others on the platform. Like any posts you find interesting, leave supported comments, and connect with others that you might want to connect with. The bigger your network, the more you’ll get out of having your LinkedIn profile visible to others.
