How to Turn Off Alexa Suggestions

How to Enable or Disable the Explicit Filter on Alexa - featured

Are you tired of Alexa suggesting things that you haven’t asked for? Learn how to turn off Alexa suggestions with these tips.

Alexa can be incredibly useful. When the doorbell rings, my Echo Show displays the live feed so I can see who is at the door and even tell the delivery guy to leave the package on the front porch. I can play the same music in multiple rooms just by asking Alexa, and I can even ask for playlists from my Apple Music account.

Sometimes, however, she can be a real pain. You ask her about the weather, and she tells you but then goes into a rant about some other feature that she can offer, which you didn’t ask about. It’s like that annoying neighbor who won’t stop talking when you’re desperately trying to make an appointment. Thankfully, there are ways to minimize these unwanted tidbits of information that Alexa is so desperate to give us. Here’s how to turn off Alexa suggestions.

Ask Alexa

One of the simplest ways to stop Alexa from providing you with unrequested information is to just ask her to stop doing it. While this will work in the short-term, you may find that after a while Alexa will start offering suggestions again.

How to Get Alexa to Turn Off Suggestions Temporarily

All you need to do is ask. However, the suggestions are only snoozed, not permanently disabled.

  1. Say “Alexa, stop by the way.”
  2. You should hear a response that Alexa will avoid sending follow-up suggestions in the future.
  3. If the suggestions return, you can ask Alexa to stop them again.

Create a Routine

If you’re getting tired of having to ask Alexa to stop giving you suggestions every so often, you can set up a routine to do it for you. You can then set this routine to run at a set time each day, so you never need to ask Alexa yourself.

How to Automatically Ask Alexa to Turn Off Suggestions Every Day

You can create routines to automatically run any command that you can say to Alexa. In this case, you can get Alexa to ask itself to stop the suggestions.

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap the More icon.

Turn on Brief Mode

Another thing you can try that may stop or limit Alexa’s suggestions is turning on Brief Mode. This gets Alexa to give much shorter responses, or sometimes even respond with a sound rather than speaking. Turning this on may cut down some of the suggestions.

You can turn on Brief Mode through the settings in the Alexa app.

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap the More icon.

Take Control of Alexa

If you’re sick to death of Alexa giving you additional information that you didn’t ask for, then learning how to turn off Alexa suggestions can help to save your sanity a little. Amazon is understandably keen for you to learn about the abilities of Alexa, but its method of doing so is a little blunt, and to be honest, the suggestions aren’t usually that great. Once in a while, they do offer the odd gem, however, like how it’s possible to create multiple timers in Alexa.

However, at some point in the near future, Alexa is going to be seeing some significant changes with the introduction of AI smarts that will make talking to Alexa more like having a real conversation. It will also make Alexa able to interpret more vague results, such as “make the lights look spooky.” I’m looking forward to testing out these new features when they drop.
