why in the world would i want to enter any of my passwords? seems counter productive and dangerous to me…am i wrong?

That’s exactly what I thought but on reading it a second time it looks like you just enter your email address and it is checked against a database to see if that email address has ever been compromised.

My understanding on this might be wrong so just in case it does ask for passwords I would agree with you that it would be unsafe to enter your passwords.
