YouTube Founders Take Delicious Off of Yahoo!’s Flailing Hands

Yahoo finds a buyer for DeliciousBack in December of last year, Yahoo! took out the axe and started chopping.  600 employees along with several of their services were up on the chopping block including Delicious.  Although Yahoo! later announced they were looking to sell Delicious rather than sunset it, things honestly didn’t look good for my favorite website bookmarking service.  Well today we have some great news to announce!  After months of searching, it looks like Yahoo! found a buyer!

Who?  Well do you remember Chad Hurley and Steve Chen?  No?  Well they’re the guys who founded YouTube and sold it off to Google in 2006 becoming instant billionaires (are almost anyways after taxes…).   So between the two of them they have founded a new startup company called AVOS which, if you take a look at the site, looks like it was founded specifically for this deal.

Neither party will comment much on the figures of the sale, but it was “leaked” that the acquisition price was set at $5 million. This shows a huge loss for Yahoo, as it originally purchased Delicious in 2005 for $18 million and has probably never seen a dime of profit from their investment but who knows.

Delicious posted the following release on their official blog regarding the announcement:

Today, we’re pleased to announce that Delicious has been acquired by the founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. As creators of the largest online video platform, they have firsthand experience enabling millions of users to share their experiences with the world. They are committed to running and improving Delicious going forward.

Providing a seamless transition for users is incredibly important for both companies. Yahoo! will continue to operate Delicious until approximately July 2011. When the transition period is complete, your information will be moved over to Delicious’ new owner.

Starting today, we will ask you to login to Delicious again and agree to let Yahoo! transfer your bookmarks to the new owner. That way, you’ll enjoy uninterrupted use of the service and will keep your account and all of your bookmarks when we make the transition. For more information on the Delicious transition, please refer to this FAQ.

Thank you for your patience in this time of transition and thank you for using Delicious!

Here at groovyPost, this comes as great news.  We’re big fans of Delicious, and with this announcement we’re sure the service will be sticking around for many years to come !
