Microsoft Word makes it easy to add the same footer to every page, but what if you want different footers? Learn how to make different footers in Word.

Microsoft Word is a powerful tool for creating all kinds of documents, whether it’s a letter, an essay, or a poster.

You can customize every section of your page, from your page title to your header and footers. For instance, you can add different footers in Words, allowing you to customize how each page looks.

If you want to make different footers in Word, follow these steps.

How to Make a Footer in Word

Before you can make different footers, you need to know how to make your first footer.

Here’s how to add a footer in Word:

  1. Click on the Insert menu.

  3. Choose the footer style that you want to use from the options provided.
  4. If you don’t want to use any of the footer styles, click on Edit Footer to create your own custom footer.

  5. Edit or add text to your footer.

  6. Click Close Header and Footer or press Esc to exit.

Your footer is now created. If you want to edit it, just double-click on your footer.

How to Make a Different Footer in Word for the First Page

You might only want a different footer for the first page of your document. This may be the case if your document includes a title page, for example.

To make a different footer in Word for the first page:

  1. Click on the Insert menu.

  3. Choose the footer style that you want to use.
  4. If you don’t want to use any of the footer styles, click on Edit Footer.
  5. Check the Different First Page checkbox.

  6. Your first footer will now have the label First Page Footer.

  7. Edit this footer, then press Esc to exit.
  8. Scroll down to the next page and double-click on the footer.
  9. Edit this footer. This will become the footer for all pages except the first.

  10. Press Esc to exit (or click your mouse outside of the footer box).

How to Make Different Footers in Word for Odd and Even Pages

It’s also possible to create different footers for odd and even pages. You might want to do this if you’re creating a printed document with page numbers, for example, and want those page numbers to always appear at the unbound edge of the page.

To make a different footer in Word for odd and even pages:

  1. Click on the Insert menu.

  2. Click on Footer.

  3. Choose the footer style that you want to use.
  4. If you don’t want to use any of the footer styles, click on Edit Footer.
  5. Check the Different Odd & Even Pages checkbox.

  6. Your first footer will now have the label Odd Page Footer.

  7. Edit this footer, then press Esc to exit. This will become the footer for all odd pages.
  8. Scroll down to the next page and double-click on the footer, which will be labeled Even Page Footer.

  9. Edit this footer. This will become the footer for all even pages.
  10. Press Esc to exit.

How to Make Different Footers in Word for Any Page

What if you want to have multiple different footers? It is possible to do so, but it’s a little more complicated.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Click on the Insert menu.

  2. Click on Footer.

  3. Choose the footer style that you want to use.
  4. Click on Edit Footer to edit any of these.
  5. Create your first footer, and hit Esc to exit.
  6. Now move your cursor to the last page where you want this footer to appear.
  7. Click on the Layout menu and then click on Breaks.

  8. Under Section Breaks, click on Next Page.

  9. Scroll to the bottom of the page and double-click on your footer. It should now read Footer -Section 2-.

  10. Click on Link to Previous in the ribbon. This button should be deselected to ensure that the footers are different in each section.

  11. Edit your footer, and then hit Esc to exit.
  12. Repeat steps 5-9 above to create as many different footers as you wish.

Creating Custom Word Documents

Using the steps above, you’ll be able to make different footers for your Word documents.

The more you know about Word, the more you can make it do what you actually want it to, rather than what it thinks you want it to.
