How-To Setup a Private Family WordPress Blog

If you’re looking to run a Private Friends and Family Website, look no further!  just did everyone a HUGE favor by releasing the WordPress Plugin Absolute Privacy.

Like John, I’ve run a “Private” family blog for friends and relatives which I secured using a less than elegant . I was never really happy with this solution since sometimes people I didn’t know had the password (plus a few people always forgot the password which resulted in a phone call.)

John’s Plugin Absolute Privacy takes a normal WordPress Blog and turns it into a Password Protected Invite only Blog/Website.  All the features I’ve been waiting for have been included:

  • Users must Register and be Approved before viewing your site (Configurable)
  • Force registrants to enter first and last name
  • Get emailed every time an approval is waiting (with a link for quick approval)
  • Allow registrants to choose their passwords
  • Automated password reset for the less than brilliant family members
  • Perfect for family blogs, personal sites, and private communities!

Like the features above explain, the process is VERY simple.  After installing the Plug-in and activating it, simply goto the options menu and check the Members Only Check-Box:

Absolute Privacy Enable Privacy - Private WordPress Blog Plugin

At this point, the site will require users to log in before accessing your site.

If you want to check to see if any users are waiting to be approved (besides the point you will get an email) just Click Users –> Moderate Users

It's good to know your stand towards this comment thing going on. I've visited some design sites before that I find have

repetitive comments from visitors, might be one of those you were pertaining to.

    good deals

I’m so glad I came across this. I’ve been searching all over the place for something like this to run an internal company collaboration site, and this plugin is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!!

This is a great idea! I have never thought about having a private blog, but I can definitely see its uses. My family would love this for sharing information that only has to do with us and private photos and such, also for business uses like Kevin said.

      Hi Jen,

Yeah the private blog plugin works great for my fam. We can upload pics, share what’s going on in the family and all keep in touch. It’s kinda like a private facebook account plus the plugin author keeps it updated so that’s been nice also.

Thank-you in advance! This is one of the best blogs Ive ever read. I was not expecting that I’d get so much out of reading your write up!

Try Friends Only for a simpler option – no registration or passwords required. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/friends-only/

Thanks Gabe for the FYI. I’ll take a look and do a write-up on it. Sounds like a simple plugin that would probably work for most.

      Thnx
