How to Change Your iPhone or iPad Name

Struggling to find your iPhone or iPad in your device list? You’ll need to rename them. This guide explains how.

Apple gives your new iPhone a generic (and boring) name when you first set it up. That name displays when connecting to Bluetooth devices, using AirDrop, connecting to Apple TV, and other scenarios.

Changing the name makes device management easier. If you want to use a more creative name for your iPhone or iPad, we’ll show you how to do it in this guide.

How to Change Your iPhone or iPad Name

Changing the name of your device is helpful when you have a new device or reset your iPhone. Instead of a generic name like “iPhone” or “My iPad (2)”, displaying when connecting devices or using iPhone as a hotspot, you’ll instead be able to change it to anything you want—as long as you’re able to recognize the device afterward.

To rename your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open Settings on your phone or tablet.iphone settings app
  2. Scroll down the screen and select General from the menu.Change Your iPhone
  3. Select About.
  4. In the About section, you’ll see the Name field with your device’s current name—tap it.
  5. Tap the X icon to clear what’s in the field, and type in the new name you want to use.
  6. Tap the Done key on the keyboard to save the change.Change Your iPhone
  7. Return to the About section, and the new name you entered will be displayed.Change Your iPhone

Once you rename your iOS device, that name will pop up when you’re pairing Bluetooth devices, connecting to a hotspot, during Apple device verification, or when you’re using AirDrop or Find My iPhone.

In addition to being creative and fun, renaming your device is helpful when you have multiple iPhones or iPads and need to make device discovery easier on your network.

Renaming Your Apple Devices

When it comes to managing devices on your network, random and generic names don’t do the trick. The good news is renaming your iPhone or iPad is easy using the steps above.

Also, if you have AirPods, you can change the name of your AirPods from your phone or tablet.

Of course, you can rename other tech devices if you need or want to. For example, you might want to rename a Windows 11 PC. You can also rename a printer on Windows 11 to make things easier.
