Secret iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch Keyboard Shortcut Tips

Did you know that Apple iPhones, iPads and the iPod touch devices have secret keyboard shortcuts you can access by pressing and holding a key on the keyboard? OK… perhaps not exactly “secret” however, Apple did a nice job of hiding this groovy feature on iOS devices and I’ll bet you’ve never heard of it before. This is a quick tip so grab your iDevice and keep reading.

To start out, open mail and create a new email. In the To: field, press and hold the . (period) key to display a list of domains TLD’s. This tip works in Safari as well making it a great time saver!

The tip works on several keys on the keyboard as well. For instance, press and hold the A key to be shown special accents for the letter.

And here’s a “ (quote) key held down.

Now that you know where to look, play around on the keyboard to find all the alternate characters and symbols.

I tried holding the period and the A, but the characters disappear. How do you keep them so they can be used?

Hi Suzy – Are you in the BODY of the email or the TO line? Also, what iPhone or iPad do you have? Is it running the latest iOS version?

      Hi Suzy
I guess I know what you mean: Keep that finger on the screen and *slide* to the special character.
… with all the umlauts in German, we’ve been using this feature since the iPhone 3G around here :-)
      Chris.
