Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Update Released
May 18th, 2008 by MrGroove
On Thursday (May 15th 2008) I was pleasantly surprised to find that Microsoft released a new update for Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 which adds support for Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP3 Virtual Machines. Microsoft also released Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1 for the same reason. Being that I don’t use VPC 2007, I won’t be downloading it therefore I probably won’t be talking about it any further. Anyway, back to the update for Microsoft Virtual Server.
Once you download the update from here your MVS 2005 Host will be upgraded to Version 1.1.629.0:
The update also update’s your Virtual Machine Additions to Version 13.820 so be prepared to begin getting warnings about all your VM’s once you upgrade your HOST.
Looking at the VM Additions, it looks like they updated the 7 core files/drivers. PER the KB article, the main changes are probably to just add support for Server 2008 and the latest Service Packs for Vista and XP:
So far, I’ve had no issues. I’ve updated about 6 or 7 Guest VM’s. I’ve even built a new Windows Server 2008 Enterprise box and it’s up and running without issues on my old Virtual Server 2005 Host.
Yes, yes I know… Many of you are wondering "Why does MrGroove care about MVS 2005 when he already has a few Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V Boxes?". BECAUSE, 1/2 my VM Host’s which have SICK amounts of memory are running with CPU’s which don’t support VT technology. This is a requirement for Server 2008 Hyper-V….. So, with that in mind, I’ll be running MS Virtual Server 2005 until those boxes die or get replaced.

I don’t see Server 2003 x64 listed in the list of newly supported OS’. Do know if they have any plans to add x64 support to VS 2005 R2? Excellent site.
Hi Jeff (Welcome to the site!)
If you install MS Virtual Server 2005 R2 Sp1 w/all the updates on a x64 HOST, you should have no problem installing x64 guest systems. Just make sure you have all the latest updates and you install the x64 version of the Virtual Server App.
