Bring Back the Windows 8 Start Screen Tile Animation

When you run Windows 8 the first time after a fresh install or on a new PC, the Tiles on the Start screen launch in an animated presentation. After the first run, when you bounce from the desktop to Start screen, the lively animation is gone. Here’s how to hack the Registry and get the lively Start screen animation back.

Note: Before making any changes to the Windows Registry, make sure you back it up first.

Use the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + R to display Run and type: regedit and hit Enter.

Run

Now in Registry Editor browse to the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\Grid

The right click an empty area in the right pane and select New >> DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Windows 8 Registry Editor

Name the new value Launcher_SessionLogin_Animation_OnShow and hit Enter.

Windows 8 Registry DWORD Value

Now change the Value Data from 0 to 1 and click OK. Then close out of Registry Editor.

Windows 8 Registry Value

Now when you hit the Windows Key, you’ll see the tiles on the Start screen tiles come up in an animated fashion. This tweak isn’t a huge change, but makes Tiles on the Start screen a more lively environment. Similar to how they display on Windows Phone.

If you want to change it back, go into Registry Editor and change the Value Data back to 0.

It seems that after doing it the animation works fine but sometimes when launching an app but mostly bookmarks the screen flashes than kicks over to the desktop. Kind of weird but def goes away after setting back to 0. Any way this can be corrected bc I like that animation affect.

I had this problem but when I tried this there was no ‘grid’ option to choose in the registry, I checked several times. Do you know anyway around this?
