Secure Password Storage

Postby Car66 on Mon Nov 10, 2008 10:23 am

I have about a million passwords online now and I need a security place to put them. I've been using a .txt file on my desktop and being that I know Notepad isn't exactly the best place to store this kind of thing.....

I'm looking for info a recommendation.

thanks groovy guys!

Hi Car66,

Great question, I think this one is even How-To worthy.

If you want an easier way to keep track of all your passwords you can try a password manager.
I've seen good things with KeePass http://keepass.info/, or the cross-platform version KeePassX http://www.keepassx.org/. Try to avoid any Online Password Manager Services because they are definitely not secure.

If you are looking into protecting a single or multiple files such as a .txt. You can easily do that with a file archiver. I prefer to use 7zip as it works with every archive format, its fast, free, and becoming very popular.
You can download that at http://www.7-zip.org/.

To encrypt a file with 7-zip
Once it is installed, Right-Click the file and Select Add to archive...
The archive screen will popup, you don't need to change any settings, just Input your password and Click OK.
This will require anyone trying to access the file in the zip to first enter a password.

 A .txt file ehh.... Well, the GOOD news is there's nowhere to go but UP in regards to security!!!!

#1 - Excel is what I use for the home. It's simple, and secure if you do it right. Take a look at THIS article here on the Forum for more details as well as links to the How-To Tutorials on groovyPost.com. Granted, I know a few people might not agree with me on that but, Excel "In my honest opinion" is actually a pretty good place to store passwords. The KEY is you need to do it correctly and use a LONG pass phrase for a PW.

#2 - In a Corporate Environment, I use 2 different products. Both can be used at the home as well. Both are VERY secure and highly recommended in the Industry.

1 - Password Safe
2 - Password Corral

Both products are FREE and VERY secure. I would highly recommend them for the Home of Work environment. If you were to ask me to choose, I would go with Password Safe because it seems to be updated more frequently AND, I like the features (one of which reminds you when it's time to change a password).

Take a look and let us know what you do.

Be safe!

Passware rocks. We keep it on a network share at work. The one thing it does not do very well is role management. So we use 2 different databases. One for the NOC and general purpose and another for the server admins (like me).

From a team standpoint tho, it's great.
