Artie’s Magic Pencil – Apple’s Free iTunes App of the Week

This week’s free app is the kid’s drawing game Artie’s Magic Pencil. Normally it’s $3, but you can get it free from iTunes until Thursday, December 1st.

What Is It?

This game is just for kids: adults won’t be entertained at all. Sorry, Mom and Dad! Artie walks around to find his Magic Pencil to trace shapes. Players need to be precise in drawing. After your child draws the figure, they can then color it in by swiping left and right. If they want flourishes like clouds or flowers, just swipe up or down. Artie’s Magic Pencil gives fun sound effects when you swipe in either direction.

Who Is It Good For?

The target market is young kids that like to trace but not quite at the drawing skill level. The app has no audio or text instructions. They’ll catch on pretty quick that all they need to do is trace with their finger. They’ll need some hand/eye coordination. Even as a (reasonably) skilled adult, I didn’t get the finger tracing on the first try. Players need to drag completely straight lines.

Should You Download It?

The app loads slow on my iPhone 5s, but not intolerable. At about 270 MB, it isn’t a huge space hog but isn’t a light app. I’m keeping this one on all my devices for when the very young ones are antsy and need quick entertainment.
