Earlier, I gave a rather ebullient guided tour of Windows Live Sync Beta 2011 (which will be known as Windows Live Mesh when it is officially released), touting its groovy potential as a backup tool and cloud storage solution. But since that brief honeymoon phase, I’ve had a chance to move in some of my stuff and I’ll have to admit that I’m having trouble getting comfortable. It seems that much of the pampering I’ve received from old faithful Dropbox has given me some pretty high expectations when it comes to cloud-based syncing and in spite of my optimistic review, I think I’m going to have to stick with Dropbox—for now. Here’s why…

For the true Google purist who uses both Google Voice and Google Chrome, the new Google Voice extension for Google Chrome is just for you. The Google Voice extension won’t revolutionize the way you use Google Voice, but it does have a few groovy features that make life a little bit easier. The way I see it, it’s a bit like Gmail Notifier—but for Voice.

“Woah a new ribbon!” That was the first thing I thought after opening up one of the programs from the new Windows Live Essentials Beta. Anyway, Microsoft just released Wave 4 of their Windows Live Essentials Beta and I have to admit, things are look very very good. I’ve been keeping my eye on the Windows Live blog ever since their post back in June when they announced some of the new features of the upcoming Windows Live Essentials refresh so being able to finally grab a copy and get under the hood is exciting.

Last week Microsoft FINALLY realized the error in their ways and announced that they will be removing ads from the footers of emails for all Hotmail / Live users. Although I’m not personally a Hotmail user, I do receive a lot of email from people who are so this will be nice!

Swish! And that’s another 700,000 hearts and minds won by Microsoft via its Live@Edu cloud computing suite of applications. The unofficial scoreboard was already favoring Live@Edu over its top contender—Google Apps for Education. The Mountain View hometown heroes, with their 8 million Google Apps for Education users, have been lagging behind Team Ballmer and Live@Edu, which boasts 11 million users worldwide. But in the wake of Google’s recent showboating over its victories in Los Angeles and Oregon, this next one’s got to sting.

Since the beginning of Outlook, Microsoft has always included the Archive and AutoArchive feature and Outlook 2010 is no exception. The AutoArchive feature automatically moves or deletes older email from your Primary Mailbox into an Archive Data File stored on your local hard drive. These files are called .PST files. In the past when Outlook .PST files had a 2 GIG limit, the Archive feature was much more important as it archived older email out of your Primary .PST file and into an Archive.pst file. That being said, even though .PST files in Outlook 2010 have a 20 Gig limit, it’s still a good idea to let it manage your older email to keep your .PST files small and system performance up!

Every year when the calendar flips to January, I like to create a new Outlook PST file and move all my email into it. I then compress the new PST file and burn it to DVD for archival purposes. It’s probably a mental thing but I just really like starting the year off with a nice and clean Email Inbox. Granted it doesn’t last very long (staying clean that is) but, it’s my once a year “new years cleaning” so to speak.

Over the past week the groovy research team (MrGroove and I) have spent some time looking over many of the different applications designed for sending free text messages from an iPhone or iPod touch. With each app there was a few different criteria it had to meet in order to be considered. Is the service free or inexpensive? Is the app itself free? Is it easy to use? etc…
